My partner and I started launching products last Spring. I oversaw sourcing and all things required before the product sales and he oversaw all things marketing, with us sharing many of the random responsibilities that come up.
We started out with some basic promotion, ranked quickly with steady growth trend and well received on reviews. (all sales are on Amazon Seller Central platform)
We promoted reviews with our customer base and were careful to stay within Seller Central Terms of Service. If you look at the profit margin, it is tight and low, and this is because we had come in with low pricing to rank and promote until we reached first page. All the products reached first page status quickly on good key words and we chose to keep prices low and build rank on more valuable key words before raising our prices.
It was during this time that Amazon did a major policy change and with that came a review sweep of anything that did not fit with in their algorithm of acceptable reviews. We tried to recover the reviews we lost with no positive results or response from Amazon, we also lost all the ranking we had built.
I was living on a sailboat in the Caribbean at the time, with limited access and my partner was having a more serious problem due to the reviews sweep on his other established brands, he was also struggling with some personal issues. We lost all our rank and all our reviews, I apologized to my partner as I was not that available to contribute to the latest challenge of re-ranking and marketing for months and my partner apologized for not having the time either. A few months turned into a few more months and neither of us have had the time or interest to re-start.
My wife and I have decided to take a few years (or more) off and enjoy time with our son before he is off to college.
